Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area Geology. How did glaciers form the Chippewa Moraine? Glaciers form when snow piles up, gets pressed into ice and begins to flow. It only takes feet of ice to begin the flowing process, yet in Canada during the last cold phase of the Earth’s climate cycle, the ice built up to over two miles thick. Book Chapter Multiphase deformation in the Granite Falls–Montevideo area, Minnesota River Valley Author(s) ROBERT L. BAUER The lower Precambrian granulite-facies gneisses near Granite Falls and Montevideo have undergone four phases of folding, two periods of metamorphism, and both pretectonic and posttectonic intrusive events.

Myers Exposures of Precambrian rocks in west—central Wisconsin are confined mainly to the Chippewa Valley and its major tributaries, the Yellow, Jump, and Eau Claire rivers, which drain the southwestern edge of the Canadian Shield.
The geology of Wisconsin includes Precambrian crystalline basement rock over three billion years old. A widespread marine environment during the Paleozoic flooded the region, depositing sedimentary rocks which cover most of the center and south of the state.

This 6"x9" paperback has pages that are packed with detailed information about Wisconsin Geology. The Precambrian (or Pre-Cambrian, sometimes abbreviated pЄ, or Cryptozoic) is the earliest part of Earth's history, set before the current Phanerozoic Eon.
The Precambrian is so named because it preceded the Cambrian, the first period of the Phanerozoic eon, which is named after Cambria, the Latinised name for Wales, where rocks from this age were first studied.

It is the right size, not too small or too large (if too small can't hold an atmosphere, if it is too large, it has too thick of an atmosphere so sunlight can't penetrate it) and is in the optimal location from the sun (temperature allows for water to exist).
This wide-ranging discussion of Precambrian rocks includes contributions from a diverse array of authors actively engaged in investigations of various aspects of U.S. Precambrian geology. Summary discussions by the editors of the five major chapters place these contributions in a logical regional framework.

The geology of Minnesota comprises the rock, minerals, and soils of the U.S. state of Minnesota, including their formation, development, distribution, and condition. The state's geologic history can be divided into three periods. The first period was a lengthy period of geologic instability from the origin of the planet until roughly 1, million years ago.
The Precambrian rocks in Minnesota define five distinct geologic terranes. The geology of these terranes is briefly outlined on the last page of the guidebook, and further details may be found in Sims and Morey () and in more recent papers listed in Morey and others ().
